Foundation Phase

Foundation

Grade R – 3

Sunningdale is very fortunate to accommodate four stream classes for all grades in the Foundation Phase. We take great pride in our learners’ academic, as well as sport and cultural achievements. We are all about hands-on teaching and creating a magical learning environment. Sunningdale takes great pride in laying a solid foundation in order for our little ones to develop and reach their full potential.

Our learners gain several skills and knowledge through high quality teaching within the framework of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements Grades R – 12 (CAPS), as supplied by the Education Department. CAPS dictates that the required subjects, Mathematics, English as Home Language, Afrikaans as First Additional Language and Life Skills, be presented and completed by carefully planned activities, in and outside of the classroom.

To assist our educators in a holistic approach, we are very privileged to have three Physical Education coaches, three Music teachers, an Art – and isiXhosa teacher with expertise in their fields. They present the Physical Education, Music/Performance/Visual Arts and Second Additional Language – isiXhosa periods. Our learners also are exposed to multimedia within each classroom and computer lessons are given by our computer educator in the computer lab.

To maintain the fun factor and incorporating the real-life experiences, our Foundation Phase learners go on various outings during the year. The costs of the outings are included in the school fees. Learners gain additional knowledge through first-hand experience outside of the classroom. These outings are fun and most enjoyable!
Together with parents and through integrating core values, Compassion, Respect, Perseverance and Responsibility, we want to motivate our learners to become young, responsible individuals and encourage life-long learning.

We look forward to working with our families as we continue to build a school where our learners will reach high levels of achievement and continue to gain confidence in their advancing skills. At Sunningdale we LEARN TO SHINE!

Intermediate Senior Phase

Intermediate and Senior phase are exciting times for young learners as they continue to explore and develop their academic and personal skills. At Sunningdale Primary, we follow the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) curriculum, which provides a comprehensive framework for learning in different subject areas. Our educators are dedicated to ensuring that each learner receives quality education and goes beyond the curriculum to help learners achieve their full potential.

In English Home Language and Afrikaans First Additional Language, learners develop their language skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Our educators use various strategies to help learners improve their language proficiency, such as reading comprehension exercises, writing assignments, and oral presentations. Additionally, learners who need support have the opportunity to attend Didactic Aid classes, where they can practice their language skills in a fun and interactive way.

Mathematics is another critical subject area. Our educators use a hands-on approach to help learners understand mathematical concepts. They use interactive videos, games, and real-life examples to make math fun and engaging. Learners develop problem-solving skills that will serve them well in their academic and personal life.

In Natural Sciences and Technology (Grade 4-6), learners explore the world around them and learn about the different scientific processes. They learn about plants, animals, ecosystems, and the environment. They also participate in experiments and investigations that help them understand scientific principles and concepts. Grade 7 learners will enjoy Natural sciences and Technology as separate subjects.

EMS stands for Economic Management Sciences, and it is a subject that teaches learners about the principles of business and economics. In grade 7, learners will study topics such as entrepreneurship, financial management, marketing, and consumer rights. They will learn about how businesses operate and how they make decisions, as well as how individuals and households manage their finances.

Social Sciences is another subject area that helps learners understand the world they live in. Our educators use a variety of teaching methods, including interactive discussions, group projects, and excursions, to help learners understand social and cultural diversity, geography, history, and citizenship.

Life Skills is a subject that equips learners with essential skills to navigate their personal and social lives. Learners learn about health, safety, and hygiene, as well as interpersonal skills such as communication, empathy, and conflict resolution. Our educators go beyond the curriculum to teach learners about life skills that will help them become responsible and independent individuals.

Here at Sunningdale Primary, we also offer a range of extracurricular activities that help learners develop their interests and talents. These activities include computers, art, music, physical education. Learners have the opportunity to participate in competitions and events that showcase their skills and abilities.

Our learners love coming to school and have fun while learning. Our educators go the extra mile to ensure that each learner receives individual attention and support. We believe that education is not just about academic achievement, but also about personal growth and development. Our learners leave our school equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values that will help them succeed in their future academic and personal endeavors.
